BLACK ROCK CRATER/POND

About 4 miles south of Black Rock Point in the Quinn River Sink there is a perfectly circular pool of water surrounded by vegetation and rock. The site is considered a geological anomaly of disputed origin. Because one side of the pond is sloped while the other side is missing, it is assumed that it is a crater from meteor, however small, measuring about 100 feet across. Since some of the the rock fragments surrounding the site are composed of baked limestone such as tufa and travertine, some might say the site may have once been a hot spring. Others theorize that the hole was formed by a UFO that crashed, but there is no evidence to the claim. No matter what created Black Rock Crater/Pond, it is certain that it is a cool oasis in an otherwise inhospitable area.
